Stepnoye Ozero, Altai Krai

Stepnoje Ozero (Russian Степное Озеро ) is an urban-type settlement in the region of Altai (Russia) with 6672 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is situated about 270 km as the crow west-southwest of the regional administration center in Barnaul Kulunda steppes, some 2 km from the northeastern shore of the salty Kutschuksees and 10 km from the southern end of the Kulundasees. Immediately southeast of the settlement is the smaller Selitrowoje Lake ( " nitric lake ").

Stepnoje Ozero belongs to Rajon Blagoveshchensky and located 6 kilometers south-southwest of the county seat Blagoweschtschenka and forms as the only place the municipality Stepnoosjoroski possowet.

History

The village was founded in 1960 in connection with the construction of a chemical plant. 1984 Stepnoje Ozero received the status of an urban-type settlement. The name means steppe lake.

Economy and Transport

Townscape end company is the chemical plant of OAO Kutschuksulfat, based on the production from the salt Kutschuksee one of the largest producers of sodium sulfate in Russia. The transport of the salt between the lake and the work done by a narrow gauge railway. The drive is connected via a connecting train to the broad gauge network of the Russian state railway that leads to Blagoweschtschenka where the station Nowoblagoweschtschenka at kilometer 71 of 1953 opened route Kulunda - Barnaul is located.

East of the village runs the regional road R372 from Blagoweschtschenka, about 40 km south-east at Rodino on the R371 Aleisk - connecting Kazakh border - Kulunda.
