Sterol
Sterols, and sterols, are a group of biochemically important natural products from the top group of steroids. Backbone is the sterol, a sterane with a 3β -hydroxy group.
After its occurrence, the sterols can be divided into
- Zoosterols ( from animals )
- Phytosterols ( from plants)
- Mycosterols ( from fungi )
Important zoosterols are cholesterol ( cholesterol) and Koprosterin that is formed in the intestine by bacteria from cholesterol.
Among the phytosterols stigmasterol counts occurring in soybeans ( stigmasterol ). Also in wheat seedlings several phytosterols occur.
The Mycosterinen heard the isolable eg from yeasts ergosterol ( ergosterol ). Ergosterol is closely related to vitamins of the D- series.
