The Stetson is a hat made of felt with a wide brim, which was first made known by Buffalo Bill and later, especially in Western as a classic cowboy hat. In fact, the Cowboys wore at the time, especially the cheaper and more practical Mexican sombreros.
History
The John B. Stetson Company of St. Joseph (Missouri ) manufactures since 1865 women's and men's hats. The company was founded by John B. Stetson, inventor of the cowboy hat. The company was so popular for their cowboy hats for a long time that the name Stetson became synonymous with the symbol of the cowboys and ranchers. The shape of the Stetson was inspired by the Spanish sombrero.
One anecdote Stetson hats began to produce because he hated himself to feel the rain on his head. For this reason he moved in 1859 from the rainy east coast to the west where he began to search for gold. As he was doing but exposed to the changing weather in the mountains, his tuberculosis worsened. To remedy the situation, he made as a protection first a tent made of beaver fur, which is highly water repellent.
Since Stetson came from a family of hatters, he knew what claims must meet a good hat. It should have a wide brim for weather protection and a high head for better air circulation. Furthermore, the hat should be water- tight in both directions and be as necessary, also suitable for transporting water. In order to have the required properties, he produced the first Stetson hat with a rim that was seven inches wide, and an unusually large crown height of six inches. This form led together with the waterproof material to the nickname " 10 Gallon " for the hat.
Today, cowboy hats by Stetson are worn not only in the American cattle industry, but also where the ideal image and myth of the cowboy is to be worshiped, for example by artists from the field of country music or rodeos. In addition, the company now also produces entertainment Stetson hats, hats and other garments.
