Steve Beresford

Steve Beresford ( born March 6, 1950 in Wellington ( Shropshire ) ) is a British jazz pianist and composer who also plays trumpet, euphonium, double bass and other instruments.

Life and work

Beresford began the age of seven with piano and played trumpet as a teenager. He studied at the University of York and founded at this time a duo with Han Bennink. In addition, he was involved in the theater scene, playing the Hammond organ in a soul band and was involved in Trevor Wishart's recording of Journey Into Space (1973). In 1974 he moved to London, where he performed with Derek Bailey's Company. With Nigel Coombes and Roger Smith, he formed the group in 1975 Three sweater, which was active in the field of new music improvisation. In 1977 he founded with David Toop, Terry Day and Peter Cusack improvisational ensemble Alterations. He also played with Eugene Chadbourne, Gavin Bryars and Brian Eno.

In 1981, he performed at the Holland Festival as a solo pianist. During this time he also played with The Slits and founded with Lol Coxhill and Tony Coe Trio The Melody Four, with which he chose mainly pop music and television as a starting material for humorous improvisations. He also appeared with Alfred Harth on in the band shape et Jive and worked with one hand with John Zorn, Butch Morris, Otomo Yoshihide, Evan Parker and Michel Doneda, on the other hand with Frank Chickens, Ted Milton, Jah Wobble and The Flying Lizards. He is a member of the London Improvisers Orchestra and worked with numerous musicians in the UK improvisation scene as Roger Turner and John Russell.

Beresford also wrote numerous film scores.
