Steve Cowper

Steve Camberling Cowper ( born August 21, 1938 in Petersburg, Virginia ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party, who was from 1986 to 1990 Governor of Alaska.

Career

Steve Cowper was born in 1938 in Virginia and grew up in Kinston, North Carolina. He received his bachelor's degree and his law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then worked in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and in the Army Reserve and served three years thereafter as Seeanwalt in Norfolk, Virginia. Then he moved in 1968 to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he worked as a deputy district attorney for rural Alaska and Fairbanks. Furthermore, he went in 1970 as a freelance correspondent to Vietnam and traveled throughout Asia. After his return he became a partner in an air taxi and cargo companies, wrote a political column for the Fairbanks Daily News - Miner, led a college course on Alaska and was also a diver for the Navy research team at the University of Alaska.

Later he was elected in 1974 in the House of Representatives from Alaska, where he completed two terms. Cowper was elected in 1986 to the Governor of Alaska, an office which he held from December 1, 1986 to December 3, 1990.
