Steve Cropper

Steve " The Colonel " Cropper ( born October 21, 1941 in Dora, Missouri) is an American guitarist, music producer and songwriter.

Life

Steve Cropper initially grew up on a farm. When he was ten years old, his parents moved with him to Memphis, Tennessee, where he came into contact with there blooming soul music and rhythm and blues for the first time and along with his school friend and later fellow musicians Donald " Duck" play Dunn Guitar learned. End of the 1950s he was the guitarist of The Mar- Keys and took with them his way into the recording studios of Stax Records, where his career began. His activities soon led on to play the guitar also and he was a producer at Stax.

Cropper landed his first chart success along with Booker T. & the MG's in 1962 with the still famous instrumental Green Onions. Since the MG's were the house band of Stax studios, Cropper played a guitar for almost all artists at Stax, including Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd. He wrote numerous titles for these artists such as Otis Redding's ( Sittin ' On) The Dock of the Bay and Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour. In 1971 he left Stax Records, after the management had changed fundamentally and Cropper no longer felt comfortable. The MG's broke up in 1975 and should not get back together in this form due to the tragic murder of drummer Al Jackson, Jr.. Cropper now produced albums by Jeff Beck, Tower of Power, John Prine, and Jose Feliciano and played on solo albums by John Lennon and Ringo Starr his guitar one. In 1975, he moved to Los Angeles.

In the 1970s, he and Donald " Duck" Dunn, a member of the Blues Brothers Band by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. In the 1990s, he started with Booker T. Jones and Donald Dunn toured as a sideman for Neil Young. In 1996, was voted the second best guitarists of all time ( by Jimi Hendrix ) Steve Cropper by the British music magazine Mojo. Today Cropper lives in Nashville and forwards the Insomnia Studios.
