Steve Swell

Steve Swell (December 6, 1954 in Newark / New Jersey) is an American trombonist with the Creative Jazz.

Life and work

Swell played from the age of ten trombone. He studied from 1973 at the Jersey City State College and was a student of Roswell Rudd. In 1975 he came to New York, where he first worked with musicians such as Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich, Anthony Braxton and Jemeel Moondoc.

In the early 1980s, he frequently appeared in Broadway shows. He played in the bands of Buddy Rich and Lionel Hampton. He became famous in 1985 by a concert with Makanda Ken McIntyre at Carnegie Hall. In the early 1990s he toured with Tim Berne's Caos Totale group and worked with Joey Baron Baron band Down and Phillip Johnston's Big Trouble. He was a member of The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra, Lou Grassi PoBand, Cecil Taylor Orchestra Humane and Jemeel Moondocs Jus Grew Orchestra. In addition, he worked with Patrick Brennan, Bill Dixon, Butch Morris, John Zorn, Elliott Sharp and Perry Robinson.

In 1996 his first album - Observations, played in a duo with Chris Kelsey - as a bandleader on the CIMP label, which includes many more as a leader or co-leader followed. He worked with the bands The implicate order, The Transcendentalists and Particle Data Group and a number of his own trio and quartet formations. Regular musical partners are Ken Filiano, William Parker and Lou Grassi. In 2002 he founded a trio with bassist Tom Abbs and drummer Geoff Mann, which was extended with Ursel Schlicht quartet. With Biggi Vinkeloe and Harris Eisenstadt, he formed the trio The Diplomats.
