Steven V. Ley

Steven Victor Ley ( born December 10, 1945 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England ) is a British chemist.

Life and work

Steven Victor Ley was born the son of Mary ley, born Hall, and Ralph Gilbert Ley. He studied at Loughborough University, where he in 1969 his Bachelor and his Diploma in Industrial Studies acquired. He was there his doctorate with a thesis on Benzyn for Ph. D. in 1972. Then he conducted research as a post- doctoral student at Leo A. Paquette at Ohio State University on homoaromaticity in new hydrocarbons. In 1974 he returned to England to work with Derek Barton at Imperial College London. 1975 and 1983 he was a lecturer there. After receiving his PhD Doctor of Science from 1983 to 1992 he was Professor of Organic Chemistry and 1989-1992 head of the chemistry department. Since 1992 he has been Professor of Organic Chemistry at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where in 1997 he earned his Master of Arts and in 1999 a Scientific Doctor received. Visiting Professor stays led him in 1985 to the University of Queensland, 1988, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, from 1994 to 2004 several times at the University of St Andrews, in 1996 at the University of Salamanca, in 1996, the Texas A & M University, 2001 to the University of Florida, 2002 the University of Milan and 2003 at the University of Pavia.

Ley working in the field of organic chemistry. He synthesized more than 120 complex natural products and develops new organic molecules, such as new starting materials for organic synthesis, such as TBAP and TPAP. He also used the microbial oxidation by the bacterium Pseudomonas putida to represent important biologically active molecules and research on protecting groups and organocatalysis.

Since 1970 he is married to Rosemary Ann Jamesson, with whom he has a daughter. Recreation he finds when skiing and in the opera.
