Stewart Duke-Elder

Sir William Stewart Duke -Elder ( born April 22, 1898 in Dundee, † March 27, 1978 ) was a in his time leading British ophthalmologist and eye surgeon.

Duke -Elder wrote widespread books on ophthalmology (such as The practice of refraction, 1928, was published in 1978 in 9 machined Edition), issued 15 volumes System of Ophtalmology and seven volumes of a Textbook of Ophtalmology.

He was editor of the British Journal of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Literature and participated in the founding of the Institute of Ophtalmology in London, now part of the University of London. He headed the institute until 1965.

In 1960 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

He was an official eye doctor of Edward VIII, George VI. and Elizabeth II.

He was a knight ( Knight Commander, later Knight Grand Cross ) of the Royal Victorian Order ( GVCO ) and was knighted in 1933. He was President of the International Council of Ophtalmology. In 1957 he was awarded the Lister Medal.
