Stewart Shapiro

Stewart Shapiro ( born June 15, 1951 in USA) is an American scientist. He is O'Donnell Professor of Philosophy at the Ohio State University and Professorial Fellow at the Ark Centre of the University of St. Andrews.

Life

He has held a visiting professorship at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He works on various areas of the ontology and the philosophy of mathematics. He is known as a representative of a mathematical structuralism - a position which does not hold substantial mathematical objects and their intrinsic properties of the object of mathematics, but the mathematical structures, the individual objects occupy only certain locations within which.

He studied Mathematics and Philosophy at Case Western Reserve University in 1973. He received his MA in mathematics at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York in 1975. Three years later he obtained a Ph.D. there ( Doctoral degree with distinction ).
