Stewart Sutherland, Baron Sutherland of Houndwood

Stewart Ross Sutherland, Baron Sutherland of Hound Wood ( * February 25, 1941 in Aberdeen, Scotland ) is a British academic, Professor, public servants, and since 2001 member of the House of Lords.

Early years

About Sutherland's childhood and ancestry is currently little known. He received his education at the Woodside School and the Robert Gordon 's College in Aberdeen, then went to the University of Aberdeen, where he graduated in 1963 his Master of Arts in Philosophy with distinction. After the subsequent visit of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he completed his studies in 1965 with a Master of Arts degree in philosophy of religion from.

Career

With his first job as an assistant lecturer at Bangor University, Bangor, Wales 1965-1968, began his professional career. He was appointed lecturer at the University of Stirling in 1968, a position he held until 1972 he was an associate professor at the same university. 1976-1977 Sutherland worked as a lecturer at the University of Stirling and then moved to the King's College in London, where he was 1977-1985 Professor of History and Philosophy of Religion. In 1981 he became Vice-Rector of King's College, from 1985 to 1990 he was rector of the college.

Sutherland got the call to 1990 Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, where he stayed until 1994. From 1993-2000 he was a member of the Council for Science and Technology 1994-1996 and Chairman of the Committee on Appeal Court Procedure ( Committee for Court of Appeal procedure) for Scotland. In 1994 he became Rector and Vice- Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh (until 2002). Sutherland was 1995-2001 Member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Council for funding of higher education), 1997-1999 Chairman of the Royal Commission on Long Term Care of the Elderly ( Royal Commission on Long-term care for the elderly ), the time appointed by the Blair government, and 2002-2008 head at Gresham College.

With his appointment as Professor of History and Philosophy of Religion at King's College, London, Sutherland began to write books. His articles which he wrote for journals, are numerous. In addition to national honors he has so far received ten honorary degrees from various universities in Europe and the United States.
