Sthenurinae

Skeleton of the short snout kangaroos Simosthenurus

The short snout kangaroos ( Sthenurinae ) are an extinct family of kangaroos. The animals were represented in Australia until the late Pleistocene by several genera. Among their ranks was with Procoptodon also the largest known kangaroo ever. Was long unclear whether the surviving banded hare kangaroo ( Lagostrophus fasciatus ) is attributable to the short snout kangaroos. In this case, it would have been the last representative of the family. Meanwhile, the species is, however, put together with the extinct in the Late Pleistocene genus Troposodon in its own subfamily ( Lagostrophinae ). Many short snout kangaroos had compared to today's kangaroos extremely shortened muzzles. In particular Procoptodon and Simosthenurus are characterized. The type Hadron Omas puckridgi is known from the Miocene and seems to stand at the base of Sthenurinae evolution. Within the family Sthenurus likely to represent a primitive sister group of Simosthenurus - Procoptodon line.

  • Hadron Grannies (late Miocene )
  • Procoptodon (up to Late Pleistocene )
  • Simosthenurus (up to Late Pleistocene )
  • Sthenurus (up to Late Pleistocene )
