Stjepan Å ulek

Stjepan Šulek ( Stjepan Sulek ) (* August 5, 1914 in Zagreb, † January 16, 1986 ) was a Croatian composer and conductor.

He started very early with the study of music (piano, violin and composition ). In 1936 he completed his diploma at the Music Academy of Zagreb ( concert examination of violin in the class of Prof. Ruml ). Until 1952 he performed as a soloist and in solo concerts; at the same time he was active in chamber music at the highest level (1936-1938, he headed the Zagreb Quartet, 1939-1945 he was a member of the trio Macek Sulek - Janigro ). At the conservatory Zagreb, he taught violin from 1939, and later composition (from 1948) and orchestration ( as of 1953 ). His works have been played since 1945 at national and international level ( Europe, USA and South America). In 1948 he became a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1954 an official member and secretary of the Music Department at the Academy. From 1958 to 1964 he was chief conductor of the chamber and the Symphony Orchestra of the Zagreb Radio - television and undertook numerous European tours with these ensembles. As a guest conductor he has been regularly invited by the symphony orchestras of Zagreb, Belgrade and Slovenia. For his artistic work him several honors and awards were presented by the highest institutions of his country. Stjepan Sulek died on January 16, 1986 in his hometown of Zagreb and was buried at the local cemetery Mirogoj.
