Stockfish (chess)

Stockfish (English for stockfish ) is an open -source chess program, developed by Tord Romstad, Joona Kiiski and Marco Costalba and is licensed under the GNU General Public License. The current version of DD (Updated: November 29, 2013) is available in compiled versions for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X Snow Leopard 32-bit/64-bit for Apple iOS is version 2.7.0 before. An implementation for mobile devices using the Android operating system exists both as an independent program with a user interface under the name DroidFish as well as in the form of an importable engine for the free program Chess for Android, and similar programs that use different engines is possible. Likewise Stockfish can be used with the help of the paid program pbchess on e- book readers of the brands Kindle, Kobo and pocketbook.

The program uses the UCI protocol and can therefore be operated under different graphical interfaces. It can be used in parallel in multiprocessor systems or in computers with multi-core processors up to 32 processor cores, the maximum size of the hash table is eight gigabytes. The development of the program developed by Romstad Glaurung ( last version 2.2 from December 2008) used an alpha - beta search and bitboards. It is written in the programming language C . The major version does not currently support endgame databases. Other programmers have an alternative Stockfish 2.0.1 version provided with access to Gaviota tablebases, along with other changes.

In various rankings Stockfish DD is just behind the commercial program Houdini.

Currently Stockfish is developed by distributed computing on a public test framework.
