Strait of Baltiysk

The Pillauer low or Pillauer Seetief is a passage through the Vistula Spit of the Baltic Sea in the Vistula Lagoon.

History

Access to the Vistula Lagoon has in the past changed constantly. So this was the Lochstedter deep, which is why the castle Lochstedt was created in the Middle Ages. But the Lochstedter Tiel began to silt up again in 1311 and made it impossible for larger ships in the lagoon and thus further retract to Königsberg. 1497 was created by a storm surge that Pillauer depth of 550 m length, 360 m width. This new passage through the Vistula Spit between Fresh Lagoon and Baltic Sea was now passable again for the cogs of the Hanseatic League. 1626 with the passage of the fortress pillau has been saved. 1890 nor the Kaliningrad Maritime Canal was built to, so that the ships can now run without problem to Kaliningrad.
