Strait of Sicily

Geographical location

The Strait of Sicily (Italian Canale di Sicilia, French Cap Bon Channel, sometimes called street of Tunis ) is a strait or marine region ( Sizilisches sea ) the Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia. It connects the east with the western Mediterranean. Here the Libyan Sea passes ( Sardinian Sea) and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the western basin of the Mediterranean. In a narrower sense, only the strait between Cape Bon and Mazara del Vallo / Marsala itself, the road is in the sense of little common expression " Sizilisches sea " maximum seen in the east to Malta and the Pelagie Islands. At its narrowest point the Strait of Sicily has a width of about 145 km. The strait has a maximum depth of 316 m.

Ocean currents

As in the Strait of Gibraltar, the sea currents in the Strait of Sicily on the surface of a direction from west to east and at depth from east to west.

Islands

Near the narrowest point in the middle of the Strait of Sicily is the island belonging to Italy Pantelleria, south-east of this, the Pelagie Islands and Malta archipelago.

Undersea Plate Tectonics

In the Strait of Sicily, the African plate meets the Eurasian plate, which results due to plate tectonics unterseeischem volcanism. Examples are temporarily active underwater volcanoes Ferdinandea and Empedocles.
