Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The Musée d' Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg ( MAMCS, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Strasbourg ) is a established in 1973 and was opened in 1998 in its own building art museum in Strasbourg.

The museum houses extensive collections of painting, sculpture, graphic art, video art and design from the 1870's ( Impressionism ) to date, and a well-stocked photo library; a total of over 18,000 items. It annually organizes numerous exhibitions that are either dedicated to the showcase of a particular artist or a retrospective flow. The building also contains the Art Library of the city's museums ( Bibliothèque d'art of musées municipaux ), the art bookstore municipal museums ( Librairie d'art of musées municipaux ) and a multi-purpose hall ( auditorium ) for conferences, film screenings and concerts. The spacious roof terrace houses a museum cafe.

Building

The urban collection of modern and contemporary art of the city of Strasbourg had since 1871, and has been constantly enlarged and enriched the foundation of the Empire State Alsace- Lorraine. The project to build an independent museum, has been cherished since the 1960s.

Built in 1995 to 1998 building was designed by Parisian architect Adrien Fainsilber. The exhibition and land unfold on either side of a central glass-enclosed foyer, which is designed with 104 meters internal length and 22 meters internal height in cathedral-like dimensions. On the roof there is a 4 meter high horse sculpture ( " Hortus conclusus " ) by Italian artist Mimmo Paladino. The building is located near the old town, near the École nationale d'administration and the architecturally significant seed baroque " Barrage Vauban " ( Vauban Dam ) and medieval " Ponts couverts " ( covered bridges ). It is operated by the Strasbourg tram with its own stop ( " Musée d' Art moderne ", line B and C).

Collection

Focal points of the collection are the works of Gustave Doré ( 369 works: paintings, graphics and sculptures ), Hans Arp (53 works: sculptures, graphics and stained-glass windows ), Victor Brauner ( 37 works: paintings, graphics and sculpture) and César Domela ( 10 works ). Provides a further accent the newer and new German painting (Mark Liipertz, Eugen Beautiful Beck, Georg Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff, AR Penck, Albert Oehlen, Daniel Richter, Jonathan Meese, Thomas Scheibitz ... ), which is a representative of a Aperçu in France is especially to this extent, otherwise rarely represented flow.

In the Musée d' Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, is also located the first acquired by a French public collection of Cubist paintings, the 1923 -purchased "Still Life " (1911 ) by Georges Braque, and the first acquired by a French public collection of paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, " Joan of Arc kissing the Sword of Deliverance" (1863 ), purchased in 1996.

Significantly in number and at least regional value are also the stocks of Alsatian artists, representatives of the currents Art Nouveau, Expressionism and New Objectivity: Charles Spindler, René Beeh, Jean -Désiré Ringel d' Illzach, Henri Beecke, Luc Hueber, Martin Hubrecht and Camille Claus.

The photo library of the museum has several thousand photographs of the origins of photography to the present, including works by Nadar, Eugène Atget, Eadweard Muybridge, Étienne -Jules Marey, August Sander, Willy Maywald, Josef Sudek, Robert Mapplethorpe, Duane Michals and Jan Saudek. The regional photography is appreciated.
