Štrbské Pleso

Štrbské Pleso ( German Czech Pleso, Hungarian Csorbató ) is a winter and health resort in the High Tatras in Slovakia. The settlement was founded in 1872 as a hunting lodge of the landowner Jozef Szentivány on the southern bank of the Czech Pleso belonged from 1999 to 2007, the town Vysoke Tatry and since May 3, 2007 due to a court decision to the municipality Štrba in Okres Poprad ( Prešov kraj ). Štrbské Pleso is situated on the same Štrbské Pleso.

As of 1875, the first tourist hotels and inns were built on the banks of the lake, a year later from a road from the valley, which was expanded in 1921 to the road. 1885 connect to Stary Smokovec was expanded and the place Štrbské Pleso awarded the title spa. 1906 Hotels Hviezdoslav and Kriváň were created. With the 4.75 km long train from Štrba ( meter gauge steam locomotives, Riggenbach system, maximum gradient 150 ‰ ) the place was from 1896 to 1932 rail connection, then the old Zubačka was ( slovak: ozubnicová Železničná trať ) replaced by a bus service. For the narrow-gauge railway from Tatra Electric Poprad about Stary Smokovec had already started operating in 1911. After the Second World War, some of the hotels have been converted into Heilsanatorien for asthma sufferers, but these were later replaced by tourist facilities. In 1976, a modern spa Helios.

The site was developed at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1970. It created new hotels, a cable car and two jumps. In subsequent years, the region was expanded with numerous lifts than skiing center on. On the surviving mostly worn cog railway route of 1936 the new, electric rack railway Štrba - Štrbské Pleso were built (System of Roll, meter gauge ).

N.M. With 1346m Štrbské Pleso is one of the highest resorts in Central Europe. It covers mainly respiratory diseases.

The lake was nominated as one of the four natural wonders in Slovakia.
