Street network

As the road network, the overall structure of individual roads within a traffic space is called ( for example, within a region, a city or a country). Together with other modes of transport makes it a (total) transport network. The road network is divided into different road classes that perform different functions. For the construction and maintenance of the road network, the Highways Agency is responsible.

Germany, for example, has an above local road network with a total length of more than 231,000 kilometers. This includes the lengths of all federal highways, federal highways, state roads and county roads. The local roads are missing in this list, they have a length of about 413,000 km.

Features

A road network arises from the need to cope with transport tasks. These transport tasks are taking place between the different areas of human life (eg, work and residence).

Closely related to the road network, the term network density. He describes a ratio of road length to area ( unit km / km ²). This number allows to draw conclusions on the economic development of a region or a country, as a well-developed road network is crucial for economic development.

Note, however, that details of the road network and the network density allow no conclusions about the utility of the roads. There, a closer look at in terms of road cross section, the line and the roadway fixture is to make.

Road network length

Worldwide, the total length of the road network, consisting of paved and unpaved roads, approximately 31.7 million km. About the most extensive road network linking the United States with 6.5 million miles, followed by the People's Republic of China with 3.86 million kilometers, and India with 3.3 million kilometers. In Europe, France has the longest road network of 951,000 kilometers.
