Streptolysin

Streptolysin O ( Tacy ) is a protein of the cell walls of Streptococcus pyogenes with hemolytic activity. It is released by streptococci in inflammatory infections and is a ectotoxin, the lysed red blood cells. After an infection, antibodies against streptolysin O, which are called antistreptolysin O form.

Tacy belongs to the group of thiolaktivierten cytolysins, toxins, which are formed by a number of Gram-positive bacteria and are characterized by their ability to dissolve cholesterolhaltige cell membranes to bind by their reversible inactivation by oxidation and their capacity, cholesterol.

As part of the microbiologically - serological diagnostics, streptolysin can be detected by means of the so-called Antistreptolysintests (AST ).
