Streptomyces coelicolor
Streptomyces coelicolor is a gram- positive bacterium that is found in the soil. The species name means " sky -colored".
S. coelicolor is a model organism for the Actinomycetales. The following characteristics are typical of streptomycetes:
- They grow as filamentous, often branched hyphae that resemble a fungal mycelium. First, the substrate mycelium, which is formed on a solid surface is formed. On this, the aerial mycelium developed.
- At the end of Luftmycelfilamente exospores be, but do not have the resilience of forming endospores.
- Streptomycetes are antibiotic producers.
- They have linear chromosomes instead circuläre.
The genome of S. coelicolor was sequenced in 2002.
For practical work with S. coelicolor, in particular for genetic work, special techniques are needed.
