The Strophocheilidae are a family of snails from the subordination of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). The nearly 50 species of the family are native to South America. The oldest representative of the family are from Paleocene deposits.

Features

The to about 160 mm high enclosures are rechtsgewunden. You can be up hochkonisch flat, ovate or rarely niedrigkonisch. The mouth is relatively simple, without plates and teeth. The port edges may be folded over and slightly thickened. The jaw is relatively thick and can be smooth or ribbed. The gills are from Mesurethra type. In hermaphroditic genital apparatus of the penis on the inside wall with numerous small papillae or node is busy. A flagellum may be present or absent. The vas deferens is usually due to the penis. The stem of the spermathecae is connected to the Spermovidukt by numerous fibers.

Geographical distribution and behavior

The family is geographically restricted to South America. The species of the family live in moist forests.

System

The family is treated by Schileyko (1999) as a superfamily. Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) they provide against it in the family rank to the superfamily Acavoidea. It is divided in two subfamilies (for Schileyko (1999 ) comprises two families).
