Strother Martin

Strother Martin ( born March 26, 1919 in Kokomo, Indiana, USA; † August 1, 1980 in Thousand Oaks, California ) was an American actor.

Life

Martin grew up in Indiana and Texas. As a diver, he won the Junior Championships of the USA. During World War II he was swimming and Diving Coach with the U.S. Navy. In 1948, he narrowly missed out on qualification to participate in the Olympic Games.

Beginning of the 50s he went to Hollywood, first as a swimming coach. About bit parts, he came in contact with the acting, which he exercised, in small speaking roles; later he was - often by Sam Peckinpah - occupied in large villain roles for which predestined him his appearance and his deep voice. In the 60s and 70s he was one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. Among other things, he was in 1967 in the movie Cool Hand Luke (English: Cool Hand Luke ) to see in which he included in the list of the best American movie quotes later by the American Film Institute sentence "What we've got here is failure to communicate " -actuated.

Martin died in 1980 of a heart attack. He was married since 1966 to his death with Helen Meisel.
