Stylobate

The stylobate or Stylobates (Greek ὁ στυλοβάτης of gr ὁ στῦλος, the column, and ἡ βάσις, the step response) is the highest level of Krepis, the levels substructure Greek temple.

The stylobate is often therefore particularly emphasized that it is higher than the lower levels of the Krepis. On the stylobate are the pillars of the temple. A wall supporting parts of the top step of the Krepis other hand, are referred to as Toichobat.

To give a more harmonious look to the temple, the stylobate is often not horizontal plane design, but slightly curved upwards towards the buildings toward the center from all sides coming. This optical refinement is called the curvature. The curvature is so small that it can not be consciously perceived visually, but shall work together with other optical refinements such as the Entasis of the columns and the inclination of columns and the Cellawänden the building its mathematical rigor and is it a more pleasant appearance give.
