Styloglossus

The Musculus styloglossus is a skeletal muscle and is one of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue. It originates at the styloid process of the temporal bone and ligament stylomandibular, in animals at Stylohyoid of the hyoid bone. He takes direction tongue and pushes it between internal and external carotid artery. The fan-shaped muscle radiates into the tongue. It is supplied by the lingual artery.

He pulls the tongue backwards in unilateral contraction moves the tip of the tongue to the side. In conjunction with the other muscles it is important for swallowing, speech and sucking. Due to the muscles of the tongue, the tongue sounds ( lingual ) are formed.
