With the introduction of this technique Subaru aimed again to ambitious rally driver. Outwardly, he differed from the less powerful versions by a huge rear spoiler, fog lights and large special wheels. Another feature of the WRX STI version is the fact that it was made by hand. The produced on an assembly line WRX versions were extensively rebuilt by the Subaru mechanics in a WRX STI version. As of version II, the STI versions were produced on an assembly line. Impreza 22B STI Version

The Impreza 22B -STI is a coupe that was sold as a souvenir for the 40th anniversary of Subaru and won three FIA World Rally Championships from 16 March 1998. As a study of the 22B was already presented at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show under the name WRCar STi. This study had the 2.2 -liter engine, but with an output of 221 kW ( 300 hp) and a weight of 1240 kg.

The most striking feature of the 22B are the unique blue paint and exhibited the fender, which originated from the former WRC car, the Peter Stevens designed. The also very striking rear wing is fully adjustable to the height. The 22B was limited to 424 vehicles. In Japan, 400 pieces ( price 5,000,000 yen) were sold that were ( depending on the source ) sold within 30 minutes to 24 hours. Later Subaru built another 24 vehicles that were intended only for export. 16 came to the UK (22B STi Type - UK), five cars to Australia. Unlike the normal Imprezas 22B is equipped with the EJ22 ( 2212 cc). The engine delivers as the series Impreza 206 kW, the maximum engine speed has been reduced from 8000 to 7000 min-1 n. 22B has a total weight of 1270 kg. Colin McRae's co-driver Nicky Grist and David Lapworth of Prodrive each got a car for her performances in the World Rally Championship. These three vehicles will bear the chassis number 000.

There is much debate about the origin of the name 22B. Firstly, it is assumed that the name comes from the 2.2 liter ( 22) and the Bilstein suspension (B ) is composed, on the other hand, the name of 555, the main sponsor of the WRC teams could be derived from the hexadecimal value ( a cigarette manufacturer) ( 555 in hexadecimal notation 22B ).

The Japanese model of the Impreza WRX has the same brake system as it is used in the EU model, but the front crash box was replaced by a brace, which saves weight compared to the classical carrier. In addition, the Japanese WRX models use a semi- closed deck EJ207 engine, which was installed in the U.S. and in the EU only in the Impreza WRX STI. This engine differs from the EJ205 by a stable short block and used from 2001 until the end of 2002 forged pistons. From 2003 (Model DG -B ), the forged pistons replaced by so-called Hypercast - piston within the facelift. As Turbocharger IHI VF35 is used instead of the Mitsubishi TD04. The Japanese WRX STI vehicle also contains the built- in WRX EJ207 engine, but come here the variable valve control system ( AVCS ) and a larger turbocharger and intercooler added.

WRX STi 2.5 Details

The ( European ) Impreza WRX STi makes 206 kW (280 hp) from a four-cylinder boxer engine with 2.5 liter displacement and turbocharging. The intercooler sits on top of the engine ( cooling by the air scoop on the hood ) and, through the short charge air lines for good response. Also by the driver when needed can actively be sprayed on the intercooler water through a nozzle to increase due to the improved charge air cooling performance (Subaru carries one ( short-term ) performance increase of up to three percent ).

Like all Impreza WRX STi is also equipped with a symmetrical all-wheel drive permanent. The driver additionally has the ability to influence the distribution of force of the center differential. There are Suretrac - slip differentials on front and rear axle. The power is transmitted via a six-speed manual transmission.

The suspension side of the Impreza WRX STi is equipped all round with MacPherson struts. To minimize unsprung weight as low as possible, while upside-down structures are used. The delay takes a Brembo brake system in conjunction with a four-channel ABS with electronic brake- force distribution. Factory Ultra -high-performance summer tires ( Bridgestone Potenza RE070 ) were used.

The 2.5-liter WRX STi with 280 hp possessed compared to the previous models due to the adjustments to the suspension and tire combination, no pronounced understeering tendency more like his predecessors. From this WRX Sti slightly modified models were offered with the term " limited edition" of Subaru. This trim level had among other things a more "well " Nature (silver painted alloy wheels, additional noise insulation and a smaller rear wing ). According to Subaru so we responded to customer demand for a " less conspicuous " appearance of STIs.
