Subiculum

The subiculum is a part of the limbic system, more precisely the hippocampus.

It connects the hippocampus to the parahippocampal gyrus and it is now of the view that it represents the last instance of the information processing of the hippocampus.

It is located in the vicinity of the hippocampus ( Cornu Ammonis ), in the Archicortex ( phylogenetically older part of the cerebral cortex ) is located in the temporal lobe. Within the hippocampus, a distinction different areas or surface structures ( the type of cells found there ). These include the

  • Dentate gyrus
  • Hippocampal sulcus
  • Parahippocampal gyrus
  • Sulcus fimbriodentatus
  • Fimbria hippocampi
  • Alveus hippocampi

The transition region between the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex of the adjacent is called the subiculum. Beef- band of the hippocampus is divided by its width, cell size and cell density in four sections: CA1 ( Cornu CA for Ammonis ) to CA4. Afferents gets the subiculum from CA1 cells. Efferent fibers go from the subiculum to the nucleus ambiguus, the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and the hypothalamus. Both afferent and efferent fibers are made with the perirhinal cortex and entorhinal cortex.
