Subprefecture
As a sub-prefecture administrative units are designated below the prefecture, provincial or municipal level in different countries.
France
In France, sub-prefecture ( sous- préfecture French ) denotes an administrative level below the département and the region.
The location of the sub-prefecture is the capital (French chef-lieu ) of an arrondissement; the chief administrative officer of an arrondissement is the sub-prefect (French sous- préfet ).
In the capitals of the departments there are no sub-prefectures, here are the prefectures responsible.
Brazil
In Brazil, the sub-prefecture (Portuguese subprefeitura ) denotes a subordinate administrative unit of some large municipalities, including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The sub-prefect (Portuguese subprefeito ) is usually from prefeito, the mayor, appointed.
Japan
In Japan, the sub- prefecture (Japanese支 庁, shicho, literally " branch office, authority " ) a subordinate administrative unit of some prefectures. Hokkaido and Yamagata are completely divided into sub- prefectures, in other prefectures are only a few areas, especially islands and remote mountain regions, organized as a sub-prefectures.
