The Subway 400 until 2004, was the second race of the season in the NASCAR Nextel Cup, held a week after the Daytona 500, it was North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, North Carolina instead.

In 1966, it was first staged. Until 1985 it was a 500 -mile race and was called " Carolina 500 ", so had no major sponsor. From 1986 to 1995 it was called " Goodwrench Service 400 ". After that, it was shortened to 400 miles. In 2002, then the fast food restaurant Subway was a sponsor of the race.

Until the 2004 season, two races were held at the North Carolina Speedway. After the 2003 season, the fall race, the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 was transferred to the California Speedway, to be held on Labor Day. Thus, the Southern 500 was moved on the Darlington Raceway in November, before it was deleted from 2005 completely out of the racing calendar.

The Subway 400 of 2004 had one of the closest finishers NASCAR history. Rookie Kasey Kahne won at that time in the second race of his career, 0.010 seconds ahead of Matt Kenseth.
