Succineidae

Common Amber Snail ( Succinea putris )

The amber snails ( Succineidae ) are a family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). In most species, the body can not be fully retracted into the housing. The amber snails are the only family of Succineoidea.

Features

The housings are rechtsgewunden, moderately high and usually include only a few turns. The last turn is greatly enlarged. The shell is thin, shiny and often translucent. The animals can no longer retreat into the housing itself. In some genera, the housing is almost completely reduced, and the animals have become semi- nude or slugs. The lower sensor pair is greatly reduced. The animals are hermaphrodites that copulate each other in general. But self-fertilization may also occur. There can be up to well over 100 eggs stored in multiple clutches. The development time is greatly dependent on the temperature and is usually from one to two weeks. The animals can be up to two years old.

Occurrence and life

The family is distributed worldwide. Amber snails are mainly found in the riparian zones of rivers and lakes. Individual species also live in the dunes of the sea coasts.

System

The amber snails family is the only family of the superfamily Succinoidea. It is divided into the two to three subfamilies Succineinae, Oxylomatinae and Catinellinae:
