Sudanese Socialist Union

The Sudanese Socialist Union ( SSU acronym ) is or was a political party in Sudan.

The formed after the model of the Arab Socialist Union in Egypt as part of the efforts to find a Federation of Arab Republics SSU was the sole legal party from 1971 to 1985 in Sudan, as the regime of President Gaafar Nimeiry was overthrown in a military coup.

Today the Sudanese Socialist Democratic Union is the successor party of the SSU as a registered political party in Sudan. The party is led by Fatima Abdel Mahmood, who was the first female minister in Sudan during the presidency Gaafar Nimeirys and is a former member of the National Congress Party. Fatima Abdel Mahmoud is the first woman who has competed during the presidency of Omar al- Bashir in Sudan at the general election in April 2010.
