Sufi music

Sufi music is the generic term for different regional styles of religious music in Islam and is part of the ritual practice of the faith of followers of Sufism.

In many Sufi brotherhoods ( dervish ) the practice of music is common, often consisting only of songs, but is also accompanied instrumental in other Sufi brotherhoods. The music is a part of the dhikr ( remembrance God ), because the songs are in either recites the name of God, or sung about the love of God or the Prophet Muhammad.

Some of the lyrical works of famous Sufidichter were taken (for example, Rumi or Yunus Emre ) as the lyrics later.

Tradition / expression

In the different traditions and different ways, the Sufi music exist - if at all - to accompany instrumental. Often the instruments Bendir (frame drum ) and nay ( reed flute ) are used. The sound of Nay is usually described as plaintive and yearning, which is why they also generally regarded as the instrument of the Sufis. Just as the pipe from his homeland, the reed was cut, its sound the longing of the soul separated from the oneness of the spiritual seekers according to their original home symbolizes again.

Indian / Pakistani music culture

In India Qawwali has, as found in coherence with the Indian classical music a great Hörpublikum. This style of music was mostly known by the poetic form of ghazals by the Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the west.
