Șugag

Sugag ( Schugag German, Hungarian Sugag ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the lower Sugag Forest, in the south of Alba County. Between Sureanu Mountains ( Muhlbacher Mountains ) and the cindrel Mountains ( Cindrel Mountains ) at the headwaters of Sebes ( Mühlbach ) - a left tributary of the Mureş -, lies about 6 km long mountain village between the Capalna ( Lacul Capalna ) in the north, and the Tau Bistra reservoir ( Lacul Tau Bistra ) in the south. (NATIONAL drum ) on the National Road DN 67C - the sg Trans Alpina -, the place is 27 km south of Sebes ( Mühlbach ); the county capital Alba Iulia ( Charles Castle ) located 44 kilometers north of Sugag away.

The Trans Alpina or the "King's Way" ( Drumul Regelui ) - only partially paved - is the Pasul Urdele ( 2,145 m), the highest national road in Romania in the Transylvanian Alps.

History

In the area of the place - on a called by the locals Varful lui Pătru area - are the ruins of a Roman fort.

The place Sugag as such was first mentioned in 1750 under the name Schugag.

The inhabitants live today mainly from livestock (especially sheep farming ) and wood processing.

Population

The population of the municipality is as follows:

The highest population of the church today - at the same time the Romanians and the Hungarians - was established in 1977 and since then took off dramatically. The highest population of Germans ( 33) was registered in 1920 and the Roma ( 7) 1850. In addition, in 1900 two, 1910 and 1977 depending on a resident as Ukrainians and 1966 as a Slovak designated.

  • The Romanian Orthodox Church of Sugag.
  • The village museum of the community Sugag.
  • The TET Monastery ( Sfântul Mare Mucenic Gheorghe ), built in 1955. A wooden church and living quarters were built 1979-1999 on the site of the monastery. In the monastery 25 kilometers south from the village Sugag away 25 nuns live.
  • The OASA Monastery ( Adormirea Maicii Domnului and Sfântul Mare Mucenic pantelimon ), the wooden church was built in 1983 because of the Fetita Reservoir new here, located about 42 kilometers south of Sugag away. In an altitude of about 1400 m located, the monastery was originally inhabited by nuns; because of the difficult access - mainly in the winter - to live in the monastery since June 1, 2000 20 monks.
