Sundbyholm Castle

Sundbyholm Castle is a magnificent building in the Swedish municipality of Eskilstuna in the historical province of Södermanland. It is situated on a promontory on Lake Mälaren.

In the Middle Ages the manor was owned Sundbyholm of St. John monastery in Eskilstuna. In 1527 the castle was confiscated by the crown. 1629 was the Field Marshal Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm at his own expense to set up a school in the castle, which is regarded as Sweden's first primary school. The school was still in operation until 1987. Underdark Treasurer Seved Bååth the castle received three additional floors.

From the early 18th century the castle often changed between the different managers. On Christmas Eve 1774 it was damaged in a fire. Special services for the expansion of the goods had Gustav August Coyet, who purchased an additional 100 acres of land and docked a park and avenues. 1819 took over the baron Salomon Löfvensköld the Good, who built a herrenhof like building instead of the then dilapidated castle. In the 1890s, Prince Eugene was the castle on his painting " The Old Castle " from. The change of ownership continued until the city of Eskilstuna bought the castle in 1939. It was decided to set up a conference, which still exists, albeit in private ownership.
