Superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle

Pars buccopharyngea ( musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris ): - Raphe pterygomandibularis

Pars mylopharyngea ( musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris ): - Mylohyoid line of mandible

Pars glossopharyngea ( musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris ): - Transversus linguae

Prevents penetration of the food bolus into the nasal cavity during swallowing

Glossopharyngeal nerve ( cranial nerve IX) Vagus nerve ( cranial nerve X)

The Musculus pharyngeal constrictor superior ( from Latin musculus " muscle ", constringere " pull together ", Greek pharynx " throat " and Latin superior " upper" ) to German upper pharynx, is a square striated muscle (skeletal muscle), which, together with the musculi constrictores pharyngis medius and inferior, the muscular part of the pharynx forms. He is trained very prominent, especially in the dorsal and lateral areas. At the posterior pharyngeal wall, the paired parts of the muscle are connected to each other through the raphe of the pharynx, which also serves as the Schlundschnürern approach.

The muscle can be further subdivided into:

  • Pars pterygopharyngea musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris
  • Pars buccopharyngea musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris
  • Pars mylopharyngea musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris
  • Pars glossopharyngea musculi constrictoris pharyngis superioris

Function

The Musculus superior pharyngeal constrictor constricts the nasal portion of the pharynx ( pars nasalis pharyngis ) and thereby prevents the penetration of the food bolus into the nasal cavity during swallowing.
