Supiori Regency

Supiori ( old spelling Soepiori ) is an island of the Schouten Islands and government district ( kabupaten Indonesian ) in the Indonesian province of Papua. It is located west of Biak in Cenderawasih bay and is in the east of this. Due to a few meters wide strait that separated Teluk Surendidori,

The island is about 40 km long and an average of 25 km wide. The area is 659 km ². Supiori is hilly and covered in large areas of tropical rainforest. From this jungle area, large parts have been designated as a nature reserve. The highest point is 1034 m high. The soil consists mainly of coral limestone. The main towns on the island are Korido on the south coast and Yenggarbun on the north coast. South of Supiori are the tiny coral islands Aruri ( Insumbabi ) and Rani. Before 1963 the island was part of Dutch New Guinea and belonged to the sub-district Schouten Islands, District Geelvinkbaai.
