Supralibros

Supralibros (from Latin supra = on and = libros books, Sg and Pl ), also Superexlibris, called the coat of arms or monogram, with the possession of a book was featured. In contrast to the bookplate, which is located in the interior of the book, a supralibros mounted externally on the book cover.

Supralibros were usually added to the name of the owner, by blind printing on the book cover or sometimes also attached to the spine. How bookplate, it reflects the ownership claim and the owners pride and served adjacent to the property note also the ornament. They originated in the Renaissance period with the emergence of large private libraries.

Supralibros are an important tool of the cover research. Books that have such, are also generally regarded as provenance copies than the one referred to books that come from a famous private library.
