Surbahar

The Surbahar is a stringed instrument that is played in the North Indian classical music.

It is a type of bass sitar, which is longer and larger than a normal sitar and usually a fourth is tuned down.

Since the Surbahar similar to Vinas has a longer aftertaste than the sitar, it is mostly used in the old majestic Dhrupad style while a raga introductory alap. In other Indian musical styles Surbahar the other hand, hardly plays a role. Thus, it never came to industrial standardization of the form of the instrument, and there are a plethora of different sizes, furniture and design.
