The Susa Valley (Italian Val di Susa ) is a valley in the northern Italian province of Turin and is part of the Piedmont Region. Located on the border with France, it is surrounded in the northeast of the Graian and in the southwest of the Cozie Alps.

By running in the east-west direction leads valley trunk road SS 25 from Turin to France. In the eponymous city of Susa branches off to the north, the steep mountain road to the Col du Mont Cenis ( 2083 m) and in the upper Maurienne from. From the highest part of the Val di Susa, the SS leads 24 on the Col de Montgenevre (1854 m) to Briançon.

Geography

The valley extends for about 90 km (air line 75 km) from east to west and is flanked on both sides by several three-thousand. It gets its name from the city of Susa, which lies on the western edge of the lower Susatales. Through the valley flows the Dora Riparia, which opens in Turin in the butt.

The Susa Valley has 3,000 feet of vertical drop over seven kilometers between Susa and the Rocciamelone to extreme differences in relief. Here, the pass road winds up to the Col du Mont Cenis ( 2083 m) and to France. In the upper reaches of the valley forks northwest to high alpine valley of Bardonecchia, Cesana Torinese and southwest to the border pass Col de Montgenevre (1854 m). In Cesana south branches of the transition to Sestriere and the Val Chisone.

Communities

By 2009, the municipalities of Susatales belonged to two different mountain area communities,

  • Alta Valle di Susa (Upper Susa Valley, the largest places: Bardonecchia, Oulx, Cesana Torinese, Salbertrand and Sestriere )
  • Comunità Montana Bassa Valle di Susa and Val Cenischia (Lower Susa Valley and Cenischia Valley, largest cities: Susa, Bussoleno and Avigliana ).

The boundary between the upper and lower Susa corresponded approximately to that boundary, which existed until 1713 when the Treaty of Utrecht between the French ( top ) and the Savoy (lower) valley ( in 1720 the Kingdom of Sardinia - Piedmont).

In 2009, the merger of several Comunità montana has become effective under a mountain area reform in Piedmont. The Comunità Montana Bassa Valle di Susa and Val Cenischia was merged with the Alta Valle di Susa and the Comunità Montana Val Sangone the new Comunità Montana Valle Susa and Val Sangone. Their headquarters is in Bussoleno.

Reserves

In the Susa Valley, there are five nature reserves:

  • Parco naturale Orsiera - Rocciavrè.

The nearly 11,000 -acre nature park, which also extends to parts of the neighboring valleys Chisone and Val Sangone, was established in 1980 and named after the characteristic peaks of Monte Rocciavrè ( 2,778 m ) and Monte Orsiera ( 2890 m). In the almost uninhabited Park, stands as an excellent walking area, located on the right slope of the lower slope Susatales the Certosa di Montebene Benedetto and the Certosa di Banda.

  • Parco naturale del Gran Bosco di Salbertrand.

The approximately 4000 ha, located 1000-2600 m above sea level protected area in the Upper Susa Valley was established in 1980 and includes large forests, mainly spruce and fir forests. On the high plateau between the Val di Susa and Val Chisone a monument commemorates the Testa dell'Assietta ( 2565 m ) to the same battle during the War of the Austrian Succession numerically strong back beat inferior Savoy attacking the French in 1747 at the. At this monument led past the 19th stage of the Giro d' Italia 2005.

  • Parco Naturale dei Laghi di Avigliana
  • Riserva di dell'Orrido Foresto.

The approximately 180 -acre reserve was established in 1998 and encompasses the canyon-like gorge, which the Rio Rocciamelone who managed to only seven kilometers, 3000 meters height difference from the headwaters of the same name to peak in the valley, has been excavated. In the narrow gorge has a Mediterranean microclimate, so can flourish rare plants there for the region.

  • Riserva di dell'Orrido Chianocco.

Only about 27 hectares in size and furnished in 1980, this reserve covers a slightly smaller gorge which the Rio Prebèc has eroded.

Tourism

Attractions

The chapel on the 3538 m s.l.m. high peak Rocciamelone just northeast of Susa is the highest place of pilgrimage in the Alps. The annual pilgrimage to the Madonna della Nevi will be held on August 5.

By Susa Valley resulted in the Middle Ages important pilgrimage routes, of which the route over the Mont Cenis Pass (Italian: Colle del Mont Cenis, French: Col du Mont- Cenis ), one of the busiest junctions of the Western Alps, also known as the Via Francigena (or Via Romea ) is called. She served pilgrims from Santiago de Compostela, Southern France or Northern Europe on their way to Rome, which is why a large number of monasteries and hospices were built - what the valley known as the " Valley of the monasteries " earned. The main attraction is considered the monastery Sacra di San Michele, next to Sant'Antonio di Ranverso and which was founded in 726 Abbazia di Novalesa.

Traffic

Through the valley of the A32 motorway from Turin leads to Grenoble. You can leave the valley of Susa north across the Mont Cenis pass, the Fréjus tunnel leads from Bardonecchia from the west bordering France. A railway line runs from Turin through the Susa Valley and the Fréjus tunnel into French Chambery.

Since about 1989, the construction of a route for a high speed train (Italian Treno ad Alta Velocità, short TAV ) is through the Susa Valley in planning. The fast train through the Mont Cenis tunnel will connect Turin with Lyons. In the summer of 2001, the French agreed with the Italian government on this project. The plan provides for a 15-year construction time and costs in the amount of 20 billion euros. For the connection of the construction of two tunnels is required: The easternmost tunnel of Bruzolo after Venaus extends over a length of 12 km, the westernmost tunnel of Venaus to Saint -Jean -de- Maurienne measures 53 km - the former would have to asbestos-containing rock lead, the latter by strongly uranium- bearing rock. The projects are very controversial in northern Italy. In 2005, began as a test drilling for the project in the Susa Valley, found in the valley several demonstrations with 30000-70000 participants against the construction project instead. As part of these protests was the Susa Valley, including the highway temporarily blocked and was cut off from the outside world.
