Geographical Location

Süstedt located about 30 km south of Bremen.

The Süstedter creek rises in the district Harmissen.

  • Without secondary residences 762 inhabitants
  • With second homes ( nursing home ) 840 inhabitants

By Geestrand location, the landscape is very diverse. During the Geestrand the landscape gives a hilly character, similar to the flat meadows and broken country of marshes. As a starting point for long walks, hiking and bike tours to offer the Noltesche renovated water mill.

The village is, shaped like all the villages in the neighborhood of its agricultural history. If today, operates the majority of the population in other, non- agricultural occupations outside the village, the village character Süstedts is still preserved.

On March 1, 1974, the municipalities Ochtmannien and Uenzen were incorporated.

Culture and sights

Structures

  • The Noltesche mill on Süstedter Bach was built as a flour mill in 1880 and three years later equipped with a turbine. 1953, the commercial mill was shut down, the mill was used for private meal grinding until 1996. In 1997, the mill became the property of the municipality Süstedt until 1999, it was restored. Since 1998, the turbine is used to generate electricity.

Sons and daughters of the town

  • The merchant and founder of the later world's largest private sailing vessel shipping company, Diedrich Heinrich Wätjen, was born in 1785 in Ochtmannien.
  • From the same family also Julius Diedrich Helmerich Wätjen, German businessman ( tobacco ) and producer dates ( 1780-1832? ) ( Candles).
  • Gustav Nolte (1877-1924) was the city architect of Bolzano.
  • In Schaapsen the NSDAP politician Friedrich Bolte (1896-1959) was born.
