Suðureyri

Suðureyri is a small fishing village in the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær in the region Vestfirðir in the far northwest of Iceland. On 1 January 2011, the city had 312 inhabitants.

Geography

Suðureyri is located on the south coast of Súgandafjörður. Nearby there is a hot spring whose water is used for heating. On the north coast of the fjord, north of the town, the mountain rises Góltur up. To the south is the mountain Ufsir.

History

The first permanent homes in Suðureyri go back to the early 1900's. Economically significant in the subsequent period was mainly fishing. In 1996, the previously independent community Suðureyri was united with five other municipalities to Ísafjarðarbær.

Traffic

The distance to Isafjordur is 23 kilometers by road and 500 km from Reykjavík. With the neighboring towns Suðureyri is connected through a 1996 built, around 10 km long tunnel network.
