Švábovce

Švábovce ( German Schwab village, Hungarian Svábfalva - to 1907 Svábóc ) is a town in eastern Slovakia, with 1312 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Poprad, which is a part of the overall district Prešov Region.

Geography

The municipality is located seven kilometers south-east of Poprad, in the traditional landscape Zips.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1278 as a villa Sweui and belonged to the Brotherhood of the 24 royal parishes with which it can be proven the existence of a church. In the 17th century a manganese mine was taken south of the main town in operation, which was active until the 1970s.

Other attractions include a Gothic Roman Catholic church from the 14th century and a Protestant church built in 1970.
