Sven Köhler comes from the youth department of the BSG Motor Brand Langenau, for which his father Wilfried had been active in the II DDR -Liga already. In 1978, Köhler was delegated to the Children and Youth Sports School Emil Wallner according to Karl- Marx-Stadt and henceforth played for FC Karl- Marx-Stadt.

In 1983 he ran for the FCK as defender on in the junior league and belonged to the squad of GDR youth team for which he played nine matches. For the 1984/85 season of 1.79 m wide Köhler was nominated by coach Manfred Lienemann for the league team FC Karl- Marx-Stadt. However, his first league game, he completed only on 20 match day, April 13, 1985, in the encounter Hansa Rostock against the FCK (4-2 ). His breakthrough as a regular player managed Köhler only under Hans Meyer in 1988/ 89, he first denied the majority of the league - point game with 23 missions. After Köhler had five matches contested with the junior national team, he came in 1989 under Manfred Zapf two appearances in the GDR national team. His first senior international, he played on 13 February 1989 in Cairo against Egypt ( 4-0), in which he appeared as a substitute in the 46th minute. On April 26, 1989, he was at the World Cup qualifier against the USSR (0:3) in Kiev as a midfielder for the national team.
