Švenčionys

Švenčioniai (Polish Święciany, Belarusian Свянцяны, Yiddish סווענציאן / Swentzian ) is a 84 km north of Vilnius located city and seat of the Rajongemeinde in Lithuania.

City

Švenčioniai has 5,658 inhabitants ( as of 2005), of which about one third belongs to the Polish minority in Lithuania.

It was one of the oldest cities in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. She was an important center during the Polish November Uprising against the Russian Empire ( 1830-1831 ). Between the world wars, the city was part of the Second Polish Republic. End of the 19th century 52 % of the residents Jews, 22 % Russian, 20 % Polish and 4.5% Lithuanians .. The city was part of the tsarist government Vilna. During the German occupation in World War II was in Švenčioniai one of the four ghetto in Lithuania. Of the approximately 4,000 Jews, half of the total population of the city, only a few have survived.
