History

The part of the plane Ovce Pole, where Sveti Nikole is located is inhabited by the archaeological inventions since the Neolithic period. The first settlers of the place were the Paionians that populated and the territory between the rivers Axios and Strimon with a seat in the city Bylazora.

First, the community extended northeast of the church of Sveti Stefan and probably it was known under the name Probaton. Because of the swampy terrain and the low quality of life, the village was relocated late 3rd century BC to the right bank of the river Svetinikolska.

In the Middle Ages the population called the place OVCE poles and in the magazines he was portrayed as a fortress of the same name. In the vicinity of the place a church in honor of St. Nicholas was built in 1292 and so the place received its present name.

Under the Ottoman government was called the city Isei Nikole. In the sixties of the 17th century Evliya Çelebi visited the city twice and mentioned it in his travel journal.
