Sviatoslav II of Kiev

Sviatoslav II Yaroslavich (* 1027, † December 27, 1076 in Kiev ) was 1073-1076 Grand Duke of Kievan Rus from the dynasty of Rurik. He was the third son of Yaroslav the Wise from his marriage to IngeGerd of Sweden and the founder of Chernigov line of Rurik.

First Prince of Vladimir in Volhynia, Svyatoslav received after the death of the eldest brother Vladimir 1052 and Yaroslav the Wise in 1054 as the second oldest of five surviving sons of the Principality of Chernigov near Kiev. Together with the older Izjaslav, the new Grand Duke, and the next most recent Vsevolod, Prince of Perejaslav, he seems to have formed a triumvirate initially consensual. 1067 they defeated together Vseslav of Polotsk and took him prisoner. However, in the following year, she lost a battle against the invading Polovtsian at the Alta River and in the subsequent turmoil in Kiev Vseslav was liberated by the people and proclaimed as the new Grand Duke. Although the brothers could then sell it again, seems to have been destroyed their unity thereafter. In the spring of 1073 Svyatoslav crashed with Wsewolods Help Izjaslav and joined its successor as Grand Duke.

Just before Izjaslav with Polish support embarked on a campaign to retake Kiev, Svyatoslav but died in December 1076. Vsevolod The short used as successors moved the older brother counter and gave him without fighting back the rule.

Svyatoslav was in his reign, two manuscripts in order, the Izbornik Swjatoslawa of 1073 and 1076, in which it is added and illuminated copies of older manuscript collections. He was buried in the Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv.
