Sviatoslav Shevchuk

Sviatoslav Shevchuk (Ukrainian Святослав Шевчук, scientific transliteration Sviatoslav Shevchuk, born May 5, 1970 in Stry, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine) is Major Archbishop of Kyiv - Halych of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Life

Sviatoslav Shevchuk attended after high school, the nursing school in Boryslaw. He was also from 1983 to 1989 was a student at the seminary of the underground church in Ukraine. Shevchuk studied from 1991 to 1993 Philosophy at the Salesian University in Buenos Aires. Subsequently, he studied until 1994, Catholic theology at the seminary in Lviv. Sviatoslav Shevchuk received on 21 May 1994 by the Auxiliary Bishop of Lviv, Philemon Kurchaba CSsR, the sacrament of the diaconate. On June 26, 1994 Shevchuk received by the Major Archbishop of Lviv, Myroslaw Cardinal Ljubatschiwskyj, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He was incardinated into the clergy of the archeparchy Lviv.

Sviatoslav Shevchuk 1994 was sent to Rome for further studies. It was in 1999 at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas with a moral-theological dissertation entitled " La vita in trasfigurata Cristo " ( "Life in Christ transfigured " ) summa cum laude his doctorate in theology. Shevchuk was from 1999 to 2000 Prefect of the Lviv Theological Seminary. From 2000 to 2007 he was chancellor of the Lviv Theological Seminary. Since 2001, Sviatoslav Shevchuk was also Vice - Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. He was also from 2002 to 2005 private secretary to the Major Archbishop of Lviv, Ljubomyr Cardinal Husar MSU. In June 2007, Sviatoslav Shevchuk rector of the Lviv Theological Seminary.

On 14 January 2009 he was named Pope Benedict XVI. Titular Bishop of Castra Galbae and appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of the Eparchy of Santa María del Patrocinio en Buenos Aires. The Archbishop of Lviv archeparchy, Ihor Voznyak CSsR, donated to him on April 7, 2009 in the St. George's Cathedral in Lviv episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the bishop of the Eparchy of Santa María del Patrocinio en Buenos Aires, Miguel Mykycej FDP, and the bishop of the Eparchy Sambir - Drohobytsch, Julian Woronowsky MSU. On 23 March 2011 he was elected the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lviv for the Major Archbishop of Kyiv - Halych. Pope Benedict XVI. confirmed on 25 March 2011 the choice Sviatoslav Schewtschuks the Major Archbishop of Kyiv - Halych. Shevchuk is thus the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In addition, he was Archbishop of archeparchy Kiev, which is the Eigeneparchie of the Major Archbishop of Kyiv - Halych. The inauguration took place on March 27, 2011 in the patriarchal cathedral to the resurrection of Jesus held in Kiev.

Since the office of the Major Archbishop of Kyiv - Halych is traditionally associated with the cardinal Office, Sviatoslav Shevchuk is considered contenders for the cardinalate.
