Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing is a character that has its origin in horror comics from the 1970s. Was creating the character of author Len Wein and illustrator Bernie Wrightson.

Swamp Thing was originally a brilliant biologist named Alec Holland, the research at a synthesis of animal and plant life in a secret government lab in the swamp. During an attack occurred an explosion and he falls burning, together with a larger amount of his recently discovered the elixir into the swamp. This merges the spirit of Holland with the marsh plants: A humanoid creature arises, however, the typical capabilities of a plant has (Photosynthesis, (Tree ) starch, regrowth of severed limbs). Due to the good character of Holland Swamp Thing is also a fundamentally positive figure. It's main adversary is a scientist named Anton Arcane, which occupies the plant elixir itself to then - into an evil and ugly monster - according to his dark soul.

Despite its vegetable character Swamp Thing is repeated one relationships with women and in the comics of Alan Moore even a kind of physical union is described, which is accomplished by eating psychedelic fruits, grown from the body of Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing is probably a kind of superhero, has however, probably due to the violent, brutal death of Alec Holland, his dark side. Due to its natural plant Swamp Thing is of course sensitive to pollution, which is also a recurring theme.

Another difference from the conventional superhero is also the fact that Swamp Thing has no bourgeois cover identity.

Adaptations

Based on this figure was 1982, the B-movie The Thing from the Swamp ( Swamp Thing ) by Wes Craven. More movies and a television series followed.

Later the subject of Alan Moore has been further developed in a comic series and deepened.
