Swedish Chess Computer Association

The Swedish Chess Computer Association (Swedish: Svenska schackdatorföreningen, Abbreviation: SSDF ) is an independent non-profit association that deals with computer chess and software related to chess. It was founded in August 1984. The aim of the association is to determine the skill level of computer chess programs compared. These are carried out by many volunteers chess games between different chess programs on computers and determined on the basis of the results Elo ratings. As a cooling-off period generally common in tournament chess 120 minutes for the first 40 moves.

SSDF ranking

The determined stars ( SSDF list) reflects the relative playing strength of the programs and is published at irregular intervals. Coordinator and contact person is Thoralf Karlsson. The SSDF ranking provides a common world rankings for the playing strength of chess computers and computer chess programs dar. German readers it was mainly by the journal Computer Chess and Games (CSS ) known in which it was published since 1986 in each current version again and again.

Besides the overview list ( see Related links ), the ( German: the power) the " rating " of the ten best programs indicates as Elo, a detailed table exists (English: Full list) that lists many more programs and other statistical information is provided. Firstly, there is the expression of uncertainty (tolerance), the possible variation range of Elo - specification (eg 34 and -32 Elo points ), these boundaries include the area of twice the standard deviation (2- σ - field ), which is a confidence interval of slightly more than 95 per cent results. , The percentage of won games (English: Won ) and the average Elo ratings of the opponents (English: Average Opponents ): Furthermore, the number of completed games (Games English) is indicated for each program. Furthermore, there is the " long version " of the SSDF list, which is offered as an ASCII text file to download and the hundreds of current and historical programs lists (see links).

Currently, the list leads (3 x64 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz version Deep Rybka ) with an Elo rating of 3232, the program Rybka.

Historical leaders

The following list illustrates the increase in the skill level of artificial intelligence in chess since 1984 based on the Elo best of the SSDF ranking for each year beginning. Note that the reference to this list, that is, the absolute measure of the skill level, over the years, did not remain constant. This is due to the difficult comparison between the skill level of computers and the skill level of human chess players, because computers rarely compete against people under official tournament conditions. ( The computer would say, " because people rarely take Conversely, under official tournament conditions against us computer." )

In an attempt to achieve comparability still as good as possible, the evaluation score was adapted again and again and the list of " renormalized ". Details can renormalization in the below document - be found " PLY / SSDF the story". From such a renormalization example also results in the supposed drop in the skill level of the leader in 1991.

Their figures are therefore not readily comparable. Also, they can not be equated directly with those of human chess players, as they were exclusively determined by games between computers.
