The Riksväg 40 is a Swedish highway that is partially developed as a motorway. It runs for a distance of 321 km from Gothenburg to Västervik.
Course
The road begins in Gothenburg at the motorway junction Kallebäcksmotet with the E6 and E20. From there, the Riksväg 40 passes as a highway to Dållebo ( between Borås and Ulricehamn ). This subsection performs very hilly and forested area. Between Gothenburg and the airport Gothenburg -Landvetter, there is often a high traffic volume.
Between Dållebo to Ulricehamn the Riksväg is an ordinary road, which often can not withstand the local traffic, which often occurs at this point to congestion. Due to the very sinuous course, this section is considered one of the most dangerous sections of road in Sweden.
West of Ulricehamn up to Jonkoping the road runs on highway-like in the 2 1 system. Between Vimmerby and the connection with the E22 Riksväg 40 extends through an uninhabited area where there are many smaller lakes, some of which are crossed. Originally, before this direct route was built in the 1970s, was the road in a large arc north of Blackstad. This was a detour especially for road users in the direction of Västervik and Ankarsrum.
